A Glimpse into the Past

  • Early human use: Native Tonkawa and Comanche tribes traveled through and camped in the area for thousands of years, drawn by wildlife and natural springs.
  • Settler development: In the late 1870s, settlers farmed and raised livestock here. In 1918, a dam was built on Elm Creek to create Lake Abilene. The lake later ran dry in 1927, but the land was donated to the state in 1933.
  • CCC construction: Crews from the Civilian Conservation Corps built park structures—stone shelters, pool, concession stand, trails—between 1933 and 1935 using local limestone and sandstone. Many of these still stand.

What You Can Do at the Park

  • Outdoor activities: Camping (RV and tent), hiking, birdwatching, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, volleyball, baseball, and playground fun.
  • Nature and wildlife: The park sits at the boundary of the Edwards Plateau and Rolling Plains. Wildlife includes deer, raccoons, armadillos, foxes, squirrels, and coyotes.
  • Facilities to enjoy: Historic CCC-built picnic tables, shelters, water fountains, nature trails, pool, and bird blind.
