A Snapshot of its History

In the 1950s, Abilene’s city leaders planned to move the airport to allow for expansion. Community leader Grover Nelson wanted the old airport land to become parkland. In 1955, he proposed this vision, and by 1959 the area officially became Nelson Park, honoring his efforts).

One of the park’s signature features is the Abilene Zoo, which started here in 1966 on what was once an airport runway. A splash pad was added in 2011 through community funding and local partnerships. Today, the park hosts golf fields, playgrounds, and a walking trail in a well-preserved green space.
